WHEREAS the Bush Administration misled the country into an illegal,
unnecessary and unwise invasion and occupation of Iraq, against the advice of
most of the world and without United Nations support, against a country that had
neither attacked nor threatened the United States; and
WHEREAS, as a result of that action, over thirteen hundred American service
women and men have lost their lives in Iraq, and tens of thousands of Iraqis,
including untold numbers of innocent civilians, have also lost their lives; and
WHEREAS the invasion and occupation are becoming a severe burden on our economy
and continue to cause deep concern at home and abroad about the policies and
intentions of the United States toward the rest of the world, to the point where
the United States is widely regarded with suspicion and hostility;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Metropolitan Greater Oakland (MGO)
Democratic Club declares that it supports a stop to building any new US military
bases in Iraq and an end to the US administered occupation of Iraq, coupled with
the creation of an international body that assists the Iraqi people in freely
and peacefully determining their own future; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Metropolitan Greater Oakland (MGO)
Democratic Club calls upon the California State Democratic Party to pass a
similar resolution and urge the United States Congress, which has the ultimate
power to declare and end war, to immediately set in motion the procedure
described above.
