S.F. marchers rally
against
WHEREAS Representative Barbara Lee and over 25 other Members of Congress have introduced House Concurrent Resolution 473, calling on the Bush Administration to work through the United Nations to prevent Iraq from developing weapons of mass destruction; WHEREAS the United States should focus on bringing to justice the perpetrators of the September 11th terror attacks; WHEREAS there is no evidence linking Iraq or Saddam Hussein to the events of September 11th; WHEREAS there is little or no evidence that Iraq or Saddam Hussein pose any greater security threat now than they did during the past five years, according to reports of Members of Congress who have attended classified intelligence briefings; WHEREAS the Bush Administration has politically timed its military action against Iraq and submitted its Iraq war resolution to Congress just before the mid-term elections to gain political advantage and distract voters’ attention from the Bush Administration’s domestic crises of recession, stock market decline, rising unemployment, bankruptcies, and corporate scandals. WHEREAS the Bush Administration’s determination to force a "regime change" on Iraq by a unilateral US’ military first strike, without an imminent threat posed by Iraq and without support from the international community, violates international law, undermines the United Nations, and alienates US allies whose support is needed to prevent future terrorist attacks; WHEREAS President George W. Bush's doctrine of "pre-emptive attack" will destabilize the international order and undermine US and other countries’ diplomatic efforts to restrain other countries from launching "pre-emptive" military strikes, such as in conflicts between India and Pakistan, China and Taiwan, and elsewhere; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Metropolitan Greater Oakland (MGO) Democratic Club
Similar resolutions were adopted by the John George and Oakland - East Bay (East Oakland) Democratic Clubs. On Tuesday, October 1, 2002, the Oakland City Council adopted a resolution opposing war with Iraq.
