What have we done lately?

ACTIVISM

M.G.O. has spearheaded a successful drive among East Bay Democratic clubs to support a county-wide call for a moratorium on the death penalty, which received much favorable local press.

M.G.O. was recognized as Democratic Club of the Year by the Alameda County Democratic Party for its hard work on the moratorium.

M.G.O. organized and ran a weekly club "night" to phonebank and other needed volunteer duties at the 2002 United Democratic Campaign headquarters.

The club brought the most volunteers to phonebanks against the 2003 No on the Recall and No on Prop 54 campaigns.

In 2002, M.G.O. adopted a Resolution Opposing A Unilateral US First Strike Against Iraq, and similar resolutions were subsequently adopted by sister East Bay Democratic Clubs, the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee, and the Oakland City Council.

In 2000 M.G.O. helped the campaign to oppose the anti-gay "Knight" Initiative, Proposition 22, by providing office space and other support.

EDUCATION

In May 2003, Senator Barbara Boxer spoke before the Club and others on issues of war, peace, the environment and other progressive concerns.

In 2002 - 03 M.G.O. conducted informative meetings on:

  • developing neighborhood retail,
  • "Just Cause" renters rights initiative,
  • Prop 13 reform,
  • The Patriot Act and Civil Rights, and
  • how the death penalty is applied in Alameda County,

among others.
